In this week’s episode of the Do You Even Know Yourself Anymore? series, we’re exploring the ways your body speaks - and how often we’re taught to dismiss those signals. From my son’s early health challenges to the word psychosomatic and why it used to trigger me, we’ll look at how stress, emotions, and old patterns can show up physically.

Your body is always communicating. The question is: are you listening?

💜 Reflection Questions:

  • When was the last time your body tried to get your attention? Did you notice or dismiss it?
  • How might your life feel different if you approached every ache, tension, or discomfort as a messenger instead of a problem?
  • What small practice could you bring in this week to check in with your body regularly?

Speaker 1:

Welcome back to the Pure Possibilities podcast. If you've been following along, you know we are in a mini series called Do you Even Know Yourself Anymore? In week one, we talked about life changes and endings that can leave us feeling like we've lost ourselves. In week two, we explored the masks we wear, the people pleasing the roles, the ways we show up for others while hiding parts of ourselves. In week three, we looked at what happens when we forget to ask ourselves what we actually need and how that disconnection ripples through every part of our life. And in week four, we played with the idea of remembering to listen, not just setting the alarms or reminders, but actually giving ourself the gift of attention. And now, today, we're going to expand the conversation even further by looking at the ways our body communicates with us, often in ways we've been taught to dismiss. What if your body is trying to tell you something? So, before we dive in, a little reminder I want to share here is this is not meant to replace medical advice. Please always consult your physician or trusted health care provider when it comes to your health. What we're going to explore today is about tapping into the wisdom of your body, noticing the subtle and not so subtle ways it speaks to you. It's more of an invitation to curiosity and connection. So I actually have a couple of stories, because storytime is fun.

Speaker 1:

When my son was quite a bit younger, he woke up one morning complaining about having a stomach ache and honestly, my first thought was he is trying to get out of going to school. We had moved not too long before that and you know he was in a new school and things were pretty unfamiliar and there had been some massive shifts going on in our life and maybe you have been there as a parent where you're like, yeah, I think they're really just trying to get out of it. But I had that thought and I also ended up taking him to the doctor. The doctor did an x ray of his stomach and you know what we found out? He was literally full of shit. Like physically he was constipated, totally full of it. And that moment stuck with me because I realized how easy it is to dismiss what our body, or someone else's body is trying to say. So from then on I promised myself I would listen differently and over time as I'm going to share another story I noticed that my son was actually very in tune with his body even way more than I gave him credit for.

Speaker 1:

So a few years later maybe it wasn't even a few years, I'm not really remembering the timeframe exactly but he began experiencing chronic back pain and it wasn't just like occasional discomfort, it was constant. And we went through test after test, saw multiple specialists and didn't get any answers. And he played baseball, he was a catcher and he also was a total gamer, and so it was very easy for people to dismiss that he was in pain and and one doctor even told him that it was in his head, and I think they actually used the word psychosomatic to me, but they told him it was in his head, and I think they actually used the word psychosomatic to me, but they told him it was in his head literally from a doctor to like an 11 year old. So I can't tell you how frustrating that was. I could see and feel the inflammation in his back. Something very real was happening in his body and a lot of people in his life would dismiss it. But thankfully he was able to find relief working with a chiropractor and massage therapist, and later on I think it was even just last year he saw a rheumatologist who had said. I can't even believe that you're still standing. And so, looking back now, with what I know about trauma, stress and our nervous system, I do believe that part of stress and trauma has been stored in his body. But those dismissive words it's in your head like that was really heavy and it completely missed. The whole.

Speaker 1:

Mind and body are never separate. Our mind, body and soul are always communicating with each other, and that also reminded me of a story A friend of mine had shared a few months ago that she was in her kitchen and suddenly her back just like went completely out, like dropped her to the floor, and she ended up sharing that she recognized that she had been completely overdoing and pushing and pushing and her body was just like nope, it's time for you to stop and rest. And Sometimes when we push and push and push, we feel like we're getting all the things done and we're doing everything we're supposed to, and then our body is like yelling and screaming at us to get our attention, and so sometimes that will manifest through illness, through injury, in various ways to like force you to listen. Maybe we've been avoiding the rest, maybe we've been avoiding dealing with something, but your body is communicating with you all the time, and sometimes we get sick and it forces us to rest. Or we hurt our back and it forces us to lay down and rest, or, you know, there's so many different ways that this can happen. But it's not always necessarily a specific illness. Sometimes it can be in response to trauma, which I truly believe. Every human being has experienced some form of trauma and that trauma is stored in our bodies.

Speaker 1:

So over the last few days the word psychosomatic has come up a lot, which is clearly what has prompted this episode today. But when we break it down, psycho means relating to the mind and somatic means relating to the body. For years this word really bothered me because of the experiences my son and I had at the doctors and it felt like a dismissal, as if they were saying he's just making it up, you're just making it up, and I believed him. I've always believed him.

Speaker 1:

But psychosomatic doesn't mean imaginary. It means that there is a real, lived connection between your mind, your emotions and your body, and stress shows up in tight shoulders, heartache feels heavy in the chest, old fear can live in your gut. It is not imagined, it's embodied, and your body is always speaking. The question is are you listening? That's why I love the phrase listen to your body talk. It is a reminder that every ache, every tension, every shift in energy is sending you a message.

Speaker 1:

Let's do a very simple practice together. If it is safe for you to do so, like if you're not driving or anything, and it feels comfortable, please take a moment to pause. Place your hand on your heart or on your belly, wherever it feels right. Close your eyes if that feels comfortable. Now gently ask yourself what is my body trying to tell me today? Don't force the answer, just notice. Maybe a sensation arises, maybe you feel energy or tingles in certain places in your body. Maybe a word, a memory or maybe nothing at all comes up, and that's okay too. The act of just asking is tapping into that reconnection back to your body.

Speaker 1:

Now we're going to dive into our reflection questions for this week. The first one is when was the last time your body tried to get your attention? Did you notice or dismiss it? The next one is how might your life feel different if you approached every ache, tension or discomfort as a messenger instead of a problem, or discomfort as a messenger instead of a problem? And the last one is what small practice could you bring in this week to check in with your body regularly?

Speaker 1:

We are now going to shift gears for a moment, and I'm actually going to pull from the magic of what if? Card deck volume one. This week I feel like I've been neglecting deck one, and so we're going to do that. So these are available on my website, pure possibilities, podcastcom or shoppure possibilitiesnet. The links are down in the show description.

Speaker 1:

All right, the energy of the cards for today. What if I fall madly and passionately in love with me? What a great card for today, reconnecting you back to your body and falling madly and passionately in love with you, because you know what you are with you for the rest of your life. And why not have the most beautiful, magical relationship with yourself? Your body isn't against you. It is always working for you. Take a deep breath with me right now. Inhale and exhale. That breath alone is proof that your body is on your side, moment after moment, always bringing you back to life. Your breath is the mechanism to connect to your body as you move through your week. I invite you to keep asking what is my body trying to tell me? And please remember what I've shared here is for reflection and awareness. It is not meant to replace medical care. Please always seek the support that you need.

Speaker 1:

Next week, we're going to have an integration week where I'll be sharing a special conversation with my dear friend, michelle McGuire. Michelle is a psychic medium who works with clients around childhood trauma. She's been on the show before and this time we're doing something new recording it live in our Facebook community. You're welcome to join us in the Zoom room or watch the live stream and even ask Michelle's questions and have her pull some cards for you and offer some intuitive insights. If you'd like to join the community, the link is also in the show description for that. The following week, we'll return to this series and talk about how the beliefs and old patterns we carry shape our relationships with our body. It's going to be powerful and I hope you'll join me. Until then, give yourself a moment today to breathe, to listen and to honor your body's wisdom. I hope you have a beautiful, beautiful day and an amazing week. Much love.
